Professor Richard Oram

Professor Richard Oram, Director of the Centre for Environmental History and Professor of Medieval and Environmental History at University of Stirling.

Professor Richard Oram was born in Dundee, studied Medieval History with Archaeology at St Andrews University, and was awarded a PhD from St Andrews in 1988 for his study of The Lordship of Galloway c.1000-c.1250.

He was employed as a Commercial Insurance Underwriter by GA PLC (1987-91) before leaving to set up a freelance historical research company, Retrospect Historical Services. He was an Honorary Lecturer in History at the University of Aberdeen 1994-2002 and part-time lecturer in Continuing Education before joining the University of Stirling as Lecturer in Scottish Medieval and Environmental History in 2002. He became Director of the AHRC Research Centre for Environmental History in 2006 and was promoted to Professor of Medieval and Environmental History in 2007.

He has published extensively on Scottish medieval history for the popular and academic sectors, working especially on landscape, settlement, culture and resource exploitation.
