Dr Peter Burman

Dr Peter Burman MBE FSA, is Professor of Cultural Heritage Management at the Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus, where he is attached to the World Heritage Studies Centre within the Department of Architecture. He divides his time more or less equally between Scotland and Germany. He is an architectural historian, trained also in conservation theory and philosophy at ICCROM (Rome), author and speaker on a wide range of conservation-related topics. His principal scholarly interest is in the Arts & Crafts Movement and in particular the life and work of the architect Philip Webb (1831-1915).

From 2003-07 he was Director of Conservation & Property Services at The National Trust for Scotland. Before that he was Director of the Centre for Conservation Studies at the University of York, 1990-2002; and before that he was Head of the Council for the Care of Churches/Cathedrals Advisory Commission for England, 1977-90.

He is Chairman of the statutory Fabric Advisory Committee for St Paul's Cathedral, London, and a member of the UK ICOMOS World Heritage Committee. In Scotland he is Chairman of the Buildings of Scotland Trust, Chairman of the Glasite Meeting House Trust, Vice-Chairman of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, trustee of Hopetoun House and trustee of the Falkland Heritage Trust.
